Skills Pass timeline — how long does it take?

The realistic end-to-end window

Official materials describe the Tourism & Hospitality Skills Pass as a two-phase process. The minimum realistic timeline from registration to certificate, if you complete everything promptly, is roughly 6–10 weeks — but adding buffer for Phase 2 interview availability and any unforeseen delays is strongly advisable, particularly if the certificate feeds into a permit application.

Phase 1 — up to 42 days online

Once registered, official materials describe a 42-day online window in which to complete:

• The Basic Customer Care course and its assessment
• The Basic Maltese Tourism Product course and its assessment
• Your occupation selection from the published list

This 42-day period is the time you have, not a target to fill. Completing Phase 1 in two to three focused weeks leaves the most buffer for Phase 2 scheduling. A 14-day extension is available to purchase at €50 if the original window is not enough — but it adds both time and cost, so plan around the 42-day window as your real deadline.

Between Phase 1 and Phase 2 — booking the interview

Once Phase 1 is confirmed complete, you book a Phase 2 interview slot. Official materials describe the interview itself as roughly 30 minutes by video conferencing, assessing both English and occupation-specific competency. Slot availability is not published in advance — book as soon as Phase 1 completion is confirmed. The wait for a slot could be days or weeks depending on demand.

Phase 2 to certificate

Passing Phase 2 triggers certificate issuance through the Blockcerts platform. The exact processing time between passing the interview and receiving the certificate link is not published in official materials. Build in at least a week of buffer between your expected interview date and any deadline that depends on the certificate being in hand.

If you also need the Pre-Departure Course

Third Country Nationals working in tourism and hospitality may need both the Pre-Departure Course (for the Single Permit) and the Skills Pass. Both run through the same skills pass portal but on separate tracks. The timelines overlap — you can work through both simultaneously within the 42-day Phase 1 window rather than completing one before starting the other. Starting registration as early as possible reduces the risk of either process delaying the other.
