Overview
Yes, receptionists coming to work in hotels and other tourism businesses in Malta need the Skills Pass. The occupation to choose is "Receptionist" (Front Office). If you already hold a valid Maltese work permit, you may be exempt for now.
Choose your occupation
You choose your occupation after you pass the two courses everyone takes. The options are Luggage Porter, Receptionist, Bar Waiter, Commis Chef, Commis de Rang and “Other”.

What the assessment covers
Phase 1 is online: Basic Customer Care, Basic Maltese Tourism Product, then your occupation test. Phase 2 is an interview. It checks your English and how you do your job: you are given a work situation and asked how you would handle it.

For your employer
Your employer must check that you have both certificates (the Pre-Departure Course and the Skills Pass) before applying for your Single Permit. If you already hold a valid Maltese work permit, you are exempt for now; ask Identità how long that lasts.

Common questions
Does this apply to all receptionists, or only hotel receptionists?
The Skills Pass is for work in the hospitality industry or at a business with an MTA licence. Receptionists at a dental clinic or an ordinary office are not mentioned. If you are unsure about your employer, ask Skills Pass before you register.
What does the Phase 2 interview focus on for a receptionist?
The interview checks your English and your skills in your occupation. You are given a work situation and asked how you would handle it. The receptionist questions are not published. Practise explaining front-desk situations from your own work. This is our study tip, not an official syllabus.
I already work as a receptionist in Malta — do I still need to complete the full Skills Pass?
If you hold a valid Maltese work permit, you are exempt for now. The exemption is temporary: ask Identità how long it lasts. There is no published shortcut such as doing only Phase 1. Check with Identità before you pay for anything.
Will passing the Skills Pass improve my salary or career prospects?
Not directly. The Skills Pass shows you meet the minimum level to work in tourism and hospitality. It does not promise higher pay or a promotion. Ask your employer about pay separately.
